Wakefield Ruritan Club in Wakefield, Virginia has positively impacted Wakefield and surrounding rural areas for generations. Classified as a non-profit 501 (C) (4) organization, the Ruritan Club is dedicated to improving communities and building a better Virginia through "fellowship, goodwill, and community service."
Back in 1949, Wakefield Ruritan Club hosted its first annual Shad Planking fundraiser. Today's Club hosts various fundraisers during the year and proceeds are directly contributed to community beneficiaries like the fire department, 4-H club, and youth baseball. Wakefield Ruritan Club also awards educational scholarships to deserving students.
On Saturday, April 21, 2018, Wakefield Ruritan Club hosted the first annual BBQ And Shad Homecoming BASH. Like all Ruritan fundraisers, proceeds from the BASH have a direct and powerful effect on the community all year long. The BASH was held again in April 2019 with proceeds donated back to community organizations in Sussex County.

In light of advisories regarding COVID-19, Wakefield Ruritan Club is postponing the BASH event originally scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2020. The health of fellow Virginians is of great concern, and Wakefield Ruritan Club seeks to support and maintain the well-being of local communities in any way it can. Wakefield Ruritan Club intends to keep a close eye on events, and will be rescheduling the BASH when advisories are lifted.
